WEMA - Wildlife Educator - Climber
Steve Longenecker has been a teacher of one kind or another all of his adult life. He has been an elementary and middle school teacher, an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR "Instructor Trainer," also a Wilderness First Responder. As a rock climber, he is credited with a number of classic first ascents in Western North Carolina, including the famous "Nose Route" on Looking Glass Rock. Steve helped develop outdoor programs for many summer camps in the region and was the Adventure Programs Director at Falling Creek Camp for a number of years. Permitted by both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of North Carolina to use non-releasable birds of prey for educational programs, he has introduced thousands of children to the natural world of reptiles and raptors through his presentations to camps, schools, Scouts, churches, and other youth groups. Steve began teaching Wilderness Emergency Medical Aid (WEMA) in 1973. He continues to develop and provide programs for children and adults, especially WEMA, raptor and reptile programs.
